A Brief History of Heulwen's Trust
The Trust was formed in 1985 and its main function is to
bing enjoyment to persons with disabilities by providing boat trips
on the Montgomery Canal in welshpool. This operation started in
1975 when it was run by the Prince of Wales' Committee and a specially
adapted 70ft narro boat was builtby apprentices at Cammell Laird,
Birkenhead and launched by HRH Prince of Wales. In 1985 the trust
took over full responsibility or running the boat and the eployment
of two crew members.
The trust then raised sufficient funds to purchase a parcel of land
adjoining the canal, and a new wharf was built in 1992, and in 1993
we took delivery of a second narrow boat and this was launched and
named Heulen II by HRH Prince of Wales in May 1993.
The boats operate throughout the year and to date more than 47,000
disabled persons have enjoyed free daily trips on the canal. They
are in continual demand by special schools, hospitals etc. from
a wide area of wales, Shropshire and the West Midlands and are operational
Mondays to Fridays. There is little doubt that the trips give immense
pleasure and benefit to the groups who use this service, and it
also gives great pleasure to members of the Trust who see themselves
working for a beneficial cause. The boats operate free of charge.
